Minnesota State Law prohibits putting yard waste into your garbage. By utilizing Walters’ Yard Waste Collection Service, your yard waste can be used to enrich gardens, improve soil conditions, be used as a soil additive, enhance soil texture, increase the ability of soil to absorb air and water, suppress weed growth, decrease erosion and reduce the need to apply chemical fertilizers.
Regular mowing and leaving the clippings on your grass provides the roots with the needed shade and equals 1 chemical fertilizing per season. A lawn with a good build-up of grass clippings and mulched leaves also requires less water. Since most of us in residential areas water our lawns with city water, we could save money on our water bills as well as the cost of chemical fertilizer.
Walters offers an optional Yard Waste Collection Services for a fee of $65 per calendar year. (Unfortunately, we are not able to provide Yard Waste Collection Services to those customers in St. Paul who live East of 35E and South of Sheppard Road at this time). Your yard waste will be picked up on your regularly scheduled garbage collection day starting in April and ending the last week in November, weather permitting. Branches must be 3 feet or less in length and tied in bundles no more than eighteen inches in diameter.
Included in the annual cost is the use of a 94 gallon yard waste cart (similar to your garbage cart). You may also use your own cart, compostable bags or various types of reusable bags. These items can be found at numerous hardware, grocery, and home improvement stores.
In order to keep our yard waste program 100% compostable, plastic yard waste bags cannot be taken. Therefore, your drivers will have to debag any yard waste in plastic bags and leave the bags at the curb for you to dispose of. The cost per bag for this service is $3.00 in addition to the $65 annual fee.

Walters is not able to accept any liquid or hazardous waste in your regular garbage. Examples include: aerosol cans that have contents remaining, antifreeze, driveway sealer, gasoline and other fuels, mercury, paint (liquid only), paint stripper, paint thinner, pesticides, used motor oil, used oil filters, varnish, wood preservatives, and other household products that are corrosive, flammable, combustible, or poisonous.
Walters Recycling & Refuse, Inc. is committed to providing superior services as well as attentive customer care. Since June of 2000, we have included a fuel surcharge on your invoices. Due to our inability to control variable the changes in fuel costs, and our desire to provide our customers with an equitable, tangible adjustment, we have instituted the following fuel surcharge index. The fuel surcharge will be adjusted monthly based on the then current weekly U. S. Department of Energy published diesel price per gallon for the Midwest Region prior to the date that your invoice was generated. For example, if the DOE Midwest diesel fuel price prior to generating your invoice is $2.82 per gallon, your fuel surcharge would be 6.10%.
We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty over the years - we appreciate it!

Q. I had someone come to my door and try to get us to switch to another company. How can Walters help?
A. Please let us know as soon as possible. We would be happy to help you “decipher” the offer you were given and explain the differences in service. Beware of offers that are too good to be true!
Q. What type of yard waste is acceptable?
A. Leaves, grass clippings, weeds, brush and small branches. Branches must be 3 feet or less in length and tied in bundles no more than eighteen inches in diameter.
Q. Can I put my yard waste in plastic bags?
A. No. We are not able to pick-up your yard waste in plastic bags. If you put your yard waste at the curb in plastic bags, our driver will have to debag each bag and leave the bags for you to dispose of. There will be a charge of $3.00 per bag (in addition to our annual fee of $59) for this service.
